I bought a behringer guitar usb link for $40 at canada computers a few weeks ago and I'm pretty satisfied with it so far.

If you have a bit more cash go with a low end line 6 pod (simply because gear box is sick and the behringer doesn't work with it) but those are around $80-$100. It comes with some native instrument software shown here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eFEO_YMRgjQ

Out of all the amp modeling apps I've tried (NI guitar rig 3, amplitude metal, and a few others), I've been using the peavey revalver III app the most. It has a really straight forward gui and way too many customization options, and can get pretty technical or challenging. And its also the least intensive on your pc out of all of them, and it also supports external vsts (like vintage amp room) which is amazing.

There's no latency issues at all and sound quality is pretty decent (after a few hours of tweaking around...digital) for a prepro. demo, or general pre production.

My only complaint so far is that I still haven't found a really good high gain amp model or quality distortion vst yet, at least something suited for death/grind. Anybody know of a vst/plugin that is similar to the 'insane' setting on gearbox or most line 6 amps?

it came with 3 different apps by native instruments. twang, ac combo, and plexi. And I'm using the demo of the revalver app.

I've also found a couple of free high-gain modeling apps here:
