Here's a shootout between a bunch of high gain heads! The 6534+ I just got is in there.

I play a HiWatt Custom 100 and its going to the grave with me.

I can't stand Mesas, I find them gutless and without character.

My favorite solid state head is a 1980's Randall RG100ES.

That's the first time I've ever seen Mesa and gutless used in the same sentence. You could've said flat or generic or overused and I could've seen your point, but Mesa's are anything but gutless, they have some of the heaviest bottom end out of all the amps on the market.

I'm not completely against solid state, they're pretty good, but tube amps tend to sound more natural and more life to the playing.

so many good amps to choose from...Any of those would do the job just fine, but I think the Orange Rockerverb 100 mkII (the brown dude seemed to enjoy that one) and the Peavey 6534+ sounded the cleanest and heaviest.

I'm surprised the Rectifier didn't sound as great, maybe it was the mic or preamp they used. The Krank1980 sounded too flat on the gain channel. Hughes & Kettner was heavy as fuck and a 3rd place I'd say. Fryette was decent. Framus Cobra had a super heavy tone, but was cutting out (because it was so deep) so it's hard to say, same deal with the ENGL powerball II and the Diezel VH4, Diamond Nitrox. Blackstar had pretty clear low end, but average overall. Soldano Avenger was kind of the same as the blackstar in characteristics.

It seems that whenever they pair up a head with the orange cab it has super bassy tone. The thing about amps is that some sound amazing live but don't sound as amazing mic'ed, like ENGL for example. Maybe the Mics aren't up to par yet with the low end in some of these amps.

But ya I love the simplicity of the orange amps, I'd just buy it in black instead of puke orange.

thats cuz you crank the gain too high, beeyatch! :p

thats every metalhead's first mistake!

if you're a clean player then ya too much gain will nuke your tone, but if you're a shredder then you need retarded gain.

Has anyone here heard (in person), or better yet, played an ENGL?
I imagine they're pretty hard to find around here.

Do you even know what you're talking about?
Oh right, stupid question. Of course you don't.

I have. Made a day-trip to Montreal 2 summers ago and went to one of only 2-3 retailers in Canada that sell ENGL. I played through the POWERBALL head, and a 4x12 ENGL cab. The tone and sound out of that thing is just fantastic, gave me a woody. I had my middle fret-finger bandaged up from a work injury though so unfortunately couldn't do very much, but i still enjoyed it a lot. Played for about 20-30 minutes.

Unfortunately that set up would cost about 4000$ before taxes. Pricey amps, but damn they sound good.

I've also seen Decrepit Birth three times and they play through ENGL Special Editions ($4000+ heads). Awesome sound live. They generally don't go heavy on gain though, so some stuff almost sounds borderline clean, but still amazing.

Yes, Of course I know what I'm talking about ya jackass. I've played in heavy bands most of my life, guitar and drums.

Fuck I told you guys that the Orange Rockerverb is a sick amp for metal!!!!! Everyone always talks about the 5150s, rectos, engl's, marshalls, line6's etc but the Rockerverb had the deepest low end with the best bite and crunch the video prooves it. And the Orange cabs are fucking tanks, and the price is very reasonable for an entry level boutique amp. Again, just get it in black if you think they look fucked like I do.

But don't get me wrong, any of the amps on that Demo would totally do the job, the Orange just stood out as the deepest and cleanest to my ears.
